Squid Game Review
Squid Game
“Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light.” - Ephesians 5:11-14
This is an in-depth analysis and review of the series after watching the whole series.
What is Squid Game?
For those who don’t know, Squid Game is a popular Korean TV show that’s on Netflix. It talks about 456 participants who are willingly invited from different backgrounds to participate in various children’s games in which the winner gets to win ₩45.6 billion grand prize which they could use to get them out of financial hardships. The cost of losing a game is execution. These games are popular in the Korean culture such as “Green Light, Red Light”, “Dalonga”, “Tug of war”, “Ggnabu”, “Stepping Stones”, and Squid Game. The show follows Seong Gi-hun, the protagonist, an indebted gambler who meets a sales man in a metro station and gets introduced to the games where he risks his life for a one time chance of competing in the deadly squid games so as to pay his debt. The name of the show is actually based off the popular kids game in Korea where the shapes on the workers helmets are derived from the elements of the game. The ending was actually surprise when you discover that the creator of the game was actually a participant and one of the kindest people Gi-hun met. He created the games to entertain wealthy and bored people like himself. The people in the game were betted on like horses.
Themes
- Money
Money is the biggest factor in Squid Game, the participants are willing to kill each other for the sake of money. For example, in the second episode of the series, the players voted and cancelled the game and were willing, by choice, to resume to these harsh games in order to obtain the money instead of relying to God’s unending grace for He is Jehovah Jireh my provider. As stated in Philippians 4:19. “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” He could lift me from my debt, no need for a violent game in order to obtain the money needed. Another example is when Cho-Sang-woo killed Sae-byeok so he could win the cash prize.
- Violence
Violence is another prominent element in the series, where people are executed in brutal ways portraying the gore explicitly. The scenes in which people are murdered is so grotesque. Other examples can be the participants kill each other in order for them to win the cash prize.
- Revenge
Another important element that is observed throughout the series is revenge. An example from the show can be when Jang Deok-Su chose to exclude Han Mi-nyeo in the tug of war game because it will make the group he is in weak, she chose, instead of forgiving him, to vow revenge on him and in the game stepping stone she killed him while taking her own life with her. The bible clearly states in 1 Peter 3:9 “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult. On the contrary, repay evil with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
- Deception
This happens during the game of Gganbu when Player 001 and Player 451 are playing and because of failing to lose, which will result in the player being eliminated, he lied about his choice to save his life. He also took advantage of the old man being terminally ill. In James 4:17 “So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.”
- Manipulation:
When the VIPs arrived, the game they were playing was stepping stones on glass and tempered glass, at a high altitude if they players fall they die. The VIP’s didn’t care about them dying to them were simply objects of entertainment. This is a human life! In Leviticus 24:17 “Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death.” They are putting humans in deadly games for the sake of their entertainment! This is vile!
Final Thoughts:
If you want to know my opinion on the show, I would say it’s anti biblical for various reasons: 1- Idolatry: The god in this show is money; people would do anything, even kill themselves for the sake of money rather than relying on the one true God. 2- The violence and profanity in this show is over and beyond, the dead people are shown in very brutal forms. If you would ask me is it morally a good watch? No. Is it well produced? Yes. Should you watch it? Well, if you are craving to see it and you do not know the core of the bible that well then I would recommend that you watch all of it with a spiritual leader then talk about it in detail how the series unbiblical with them.
